Which hot water solution is right for me?

It's time to clean your filter – here's how you do it

Choosing the right hot water system can make a big difference — not just to your energy bills, but to your lifestyle and environmental impact, too.

With so many options available today, from traditional electric or gas storage units to high-efficiency heat pumps, solar setups, and sleek continuous flow systems, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each. Whether you’re building, renovating, or just due for an upgrade, this guide will help you understand the key differences so you can find the hot water solution that suits your home, budget, and climate.

Traditional storage hot water system

This is a general term for systems that heat and store hot water using electricity or gas

Pros

  • Reliable: Works in all weather, day or night.
  • Replacement: Affordable to replace compared to some other systems

Cons

  • Higher energy bills: Especially electric systems without timers or off-peak rates.
  • More carbon emissions: Unless using renewable electricity.
  • Tank space required: Storage models need space and insulation

Hot water heat pump

A heat pump uses electricity to transfer heat from the air into the water tank.

Pros

  • Energy-efficient: Uses 60–75% less electricity than a conventional electric heater.
  • Government rebates: Often eligible for environmental incentives.
  • Lower running costs: Especially in moderate to warm climates.

Cons

  • Upfront cost: More of an investment to purchase/install (take advantage of rebates!!!)
  • Noise: Some units make a humming sound, similar to air conditioners.
  • Performance drops in cold climates: May need a backup booster in winter.

Solar hot water

Solar collectors (usually roof-mounted) heat water using sunlight. A storage tank keeps the water hot, often with an electric or gas booster for cloudy days.

Pros

  • Eco-friendly: Free energy from the sun reduces carbon footprint.
  • Lower long-term costs: Big savings on energy bills over time.
  • Incentives available: Government rebates and STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates)

Cons

  • High upfront cost: Installation is pricier than conventional systems.
  • Weather dependent: Needs backup during extended cloudy/rainy periods.
  • Roof space required: Needs sun-facing roof area and structurally strong roof.

Continuous flow hot water system

A continuous flow hot water system is a wall mounted unit that heats the water as you use it.

Pros

  • Efficient: Only heats the water that you use, doesn’t even have a pilot light
  • Convenience: Allows for unlimited hot water (as long as you have gas and water) Great for large families
  • Consistent: Works with temperature controllers to deliver constant temperature to a set point so it doesn’t fluctuate when your in the shower
  • Space: Takes up very little space

Cons

  • Energy: Requires a high volume energy supply when operating and doesn’t use renewable energy sources

It’s time to get your gas heater serviced

It's time to clean your filter – here's how you do it

The leaves are starting to turn and slowly but surely the temperature is on a gradual decline — winter is on its way. If you’ve got a gas heater don’t get caught out when the chilly weather creeps up — before you switch on your heating, you need to have it serviced.

Is your gas heater safe? You need to be sure, because carbon monoxide (CO) could be spilling into your home while your gas heater is running. CO is a poisonous gas that you can’t see, taste or smell and it is produced from burning fuels like the gas used in your heater.

CO building up inside your home can make you sick for a short time, have long-term health effects or even kill you and your family quickly.

Some of the symptoms are similar to cold symptoms, common in winter and this can make it difficult to diagnose and differentiate that you are suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. EnergySafe Victoria advises if you notice any of the following symptoms, they could be caused by CO leaking from your heater.

  • Dizziness

  • Feeling sick or nauseous

  • Headaches

  • People and/or pets getting sick at the same time

  • Feeling unwell only when you’re at home

This is why it is vital you have your gas heaters and appliances serviced and tested by a qualified technician before you switch them on and start using them.

Why you should get an Electrical Safety Check

Why you should get an Electrical Safety Check for your home

How safe is your home’s electrical system? Is the home that you and your family live in over 25+ years old? Do certain appliances trip the system? Are your electrical bills higher than normal? You might benefit from an Electrical Safety Check of your homes entire electrical system.

If you own an investment property, you would know that it is mandatory to carry out regular Electrical Safety Checks on your rental property. We take great precautions to ensure the safety of investments — but what about the safety of the home you reside in? Are you confident the electrical work, switchboards and systems are up to standard and safe?

We can help — for $99 our experienced electricians will undertake an Electrical Safety Check.*

Why is an Electrical Safety Check important?

A safety check of the electrical system in your home helps to identify:

  1. Electrical faults that could be fire risk
  2. Shock hazards caused by dodgy plugs and switches
  3. Faulty appliances or switches causing short circuiting
  4. Non compliant switch boards or issues with switch boards

What does an Electrical Safety Check involve?

A rigorous inspection of the entire electrical system in your home. We’ll run tests on your switch board and your appliances to identify current or potential electrical hazards, and reveal whether any of the circuits or components are damaged or overloaded.

  • Inspection of all accessible wiring in the property including in the ceiling.
  • Electrical switchboard inspection to check for faulty wiring, fuses and safety switches that comply with AS3000 Standards
  • Inspecting power points and switches for correct operation, and to see if there’s damage
  • Inspection of lighting in the roof and insulation clearance
  • Check the earthing system
  • Check that smoke detectors are functioning correctly and in date

We will provide you with a report of the audit with any identified or potential issues and our recommendations.

When should I get an Electrical Safety Check?

  • If you live in an older home (25+ years old) that has older wiring
  • If you live in a property that has never had an electrical inspection
  • You have just purchased a home
  • You are about to rent out your property, or list as a holiday rental
  • You have noticed buzzing switches, repeated tripped switches or regular outages
  • To provide you with peace of mind on the safety of any of the above

*Electrical Safety Audit is an inspection of the system, and does not include the undertaking of the required or recommended work, additional fault finding may be required to get to the root cause of any faults found. Please note: Electrical Safety Check is not suitable for rental compliance.
